As you reflect on your NON-FICTION book this summer, here are some ideas to keep your writing in tip-top shape for next year!*Remember, these are just suggestions! You are welcome to choose your own format for reflection!*


Be sure to post your writing on the page matching the title of the work to which you are responding, It's always a smart idea start off with the main idea of the text, but don't be a spoiler!
Then consider trying some or all of the ideas below!

  • If you had to categorize the novel you read into one of the 6 concepts listed here, under which would you classify it? Why?

    • IDENTITY, POWER, ETHICS, AWARENESS, PERSPECTIVE, CHANGE

  • If this book’s purpose was to teach the reader about something, what was it? Did the author succeed? Explain how.

    • If the book is a biography/autobiography, what did the subject do that warranted a book? In other words, what was it that made him/her famous? Tell a bit about him or her.

    • Who was the hero of the story? What was it that he or she did that made him/her stand out?

    • What attributes of the main character do you admire and why?

    • What details of the setting made the book more realistic for you?

    • A nonfiction book can be informative. What were the major topics/ideas that impressed you? Explain.

    • Does this book take you on a journey? If so, how was it?

    • Even a nonfiction book presents “characters” in action, generally as part of a conflict. What was the main conflict in the book and how was it resolved?

    • Good nonfiction writers rely on imagery just as novelist do. What scene was most vivid for you and why? What kind of imagery did the writer use to create the vivid scene?

    • What’s the most important life lesson you learned from reading the book? How did the author convey this idea to you?

    • If your book was about a famous person that you thought you “already knew,” did the book reinforce any ideas you held about him or her or change any? Explain.
